Top Tips for Motor Insurance

By Roger J Jones

If you're looking for motor insurance in Northern Ireland or approaching renewal time, here are a few useful tips that will hopefully help.

1. Remember that you have choice

We all know that in the past it wasn't always easy to find many options for motor insurance in Northern Ireland. The old take-it-or-leave-it insurance days are now fast receding and choice improving as more companies offer their products into our market. You can exploit that to secure yourself more appropriate and possibly more cost-effective cover.

2. Save yourself time

If you really love searching the net then fine - but if you don't, you may still find it a bit time consuming trying to find motor insurers that make their policies available here. So, you can bypass much of the searching if you use a site where the options have already been found and consolidated for you. It may mean you can get that competitive motor insurance quote and use that saved time for doing something you enjoy more!

3. Use your cost reduction options

As choice has increased, so have the options for reducing your premium. For example, some policies may offer discounts for things such as:

- keeping your car garaged at night (or sometimes just simply parked off-road);
- fitting alarms or immobilisers;
- not trying to include younger drivers in the cover.

What's actually offered will typically vary depending upon the insurer and the policy - but it's worth thinking about as sometimes a modest effort will save you noticeable amounts of cash.

4. Go for standard options

As a general rule, insurers like standard and unmodified vehicles. The moment you start putting in high-spec engines, radically upgrading the wheels, tyres and so on, then you're getting into customised car territory and that may prove to be very expensive (or even a showstopper) in terms of insurance. Don't forget that if you do make significant changes to your vehicle, then you must inform your insurers. If you don't, you risk invalidating your insurance.

In all areas, remember today that motor insurance in Northern Ireland isn't what it once was - enjoy and exploit that fact.
